SEO efforts generally fall into two categories, based on whether the work happens directly on your website or elsewhere on the web.
This covers everything you control directly: page titles, meta descriptions, heading structure, keyword placement, internal linking, image alt text, and content quality. It is where most SEO work begins because it's fully within your control.
This covers signals from outside your own site — most importantly backlinks from other websites, but also brand mentions, social signals, and third-party reviews. Off-page SEO is harder to control directly since it depends on other sites choosing to reference yours.
Neither works well alone. Strong on-page SEO with no off-page authority struggles to rank for competitive terms, while backlinks pointing to a poorly optimized page waste much of their value. The strongest results come from treating them as complementary.
