Computers address each other using numerical IP addresses, not names. The Domain Name System (DNS) is the internet's directory service that translates a human-friendly domain name into the correct IP address behind it.
How a lookup happens
When you type a domain into a browser, your device queries a DNS resolver, which checks a hierarchy of servers until it finds the authoritative record for that domain and returns the matching IP address — a process that typically takes a fraction of a second.
Common DNS record types
- A record — points a domain to an IPv4 address
- CNAME — points a subdomain to another domain name
- MX record — directs email to the correct mail server
- TXT record — holds verification and security data, such as SPF for email
Changes to DNS records can take time to propagate globally, which is why website migrations often advise waiting 24–48 hours before assuming a change hasn't worked.
